What is a .dclkey file?
Understanding DocuLock's companion key file format.
A .dclkey file is DocuLock's key file used to decrypt a matching .dclk encrypted file. It contains the auto-generated random key material required for decryption.
How it works
When you encrypt a file or folder in DocuLock, the app generates a random key and produces two outputs: the encrypted .dclk file and the matching .dclkey file. Decryption requires both files together.
What the key file is for
- Unlocking encrypted data — the key file provides the key material needed to decrypt the matching
.dclkfile - File pairing — each key file is intended for the specific encrypted file created in that encryption operation
- Access control — anyone with both files can decrypt, so protect the key file like a secret
Important
If you lose the .dclkey file, you cannot decrypt the corresponding .dclk file. Store both files securely, and only share the key file when you intentionally want someone to access the encrypted content. Learn more about the encrypted file itself in What is a .dclk file?.
